About our Classes
Expect to work hard in many different ways in class. It is not just about how much you sweat, but more about how mentally present you can be while that is happening. Expect challenges to your strength, flexibility, and balance. Do not expect pretzel-like contortions. No yelling or militaristic like instruction, no "one size fits all" yoga. You will learn to experience your body in its present state, modify for your own body, and learn techniques for relaxation. Come in with an open mind, an open heart, and leave your judgments about yourself behind. Above all, have fun!
Other considerations:
You will need to have a yoga "sticky mat". Yoga Community carries a line of high quality mats in a variety of thickness and styles for purchase. If you are coming for a trial class, you are welcome to borrow one of the studio's mats.
Clothing should not inhibit movement and should allow alignment of the body to be visible. Form-fitting, footless leggings or shorts and tank tops are recommended. You may want to layer, as class may start cool and become warmer.
Please inform instructor of any health conditions and concerns before class begins.
A light meal is recommended 2-3 hours prior to class. Having energy is essential.
Levels and Varieties of Classes
Please read our class descriptions carefully. To be in any level beyond beginner, it is essential to have the specific knowledge, experience, and developed skill in the level prior. Each course progresses throughout the series. Each successive lesson helps the student refine their awareness and work with increasing precision, depth, subtlety and sensitivity. Lessons toward the end of the courses will be more advanced, but will be appropriate for the level of the group. All of our instructors have the skills to adjust the practice to each student regardless of their physical condition. However, please sign up for the appropriate level so we can develop your practice.
All Levels Yoga- The instructor presents options at different levels so that practitioners of all levels can work together in the same class. Appropriate for beginners who understand the use of props and their specific needs, advanced beginners, and continuing students.
Beginning Yoga- Our beginning courses are the foundation of our yoga programs. They introduce yoga's philosophical system, basic sitting and standing poses and alignment fundamentals. Students will learn beginning prop use, preparatory work, and modifications.
Advanced Beginner- This class is for those who have completed the beginning yoga series. We will refine and review postures as well as introduce new postures, breath awareness and mindful practices.
Continuing Yoga- These classes are for those who are committed practitioners of yoga, familiar with the names and postures as taught in beginner and advanced beginner classes. Students must be confident in the use of props and know how to work within their particular limitations.
Vigorous Practice Yoga- This class links postures together in a fluid movement that will challenge your yoga practice in a new way. Students should be comfortable with the basic yoga postures as there will be minimial assistance in this class. Not recommended for beginners.
Saturday Focus Class- Our special yoga focus classes periodically replace the normal All Level Saturday class (9-10:30 am). These focus classes give you an opportunity to experience the benefits you can obtain from our workshops - on a smaller scale.
Prenatal Yoga- Yoga is especially beneficial when you're expecting. Classes can be scheduled one-on-one or for groups by appointment. Call the studio at 521-4287 for more information. Our beginning yoga series is also appropriate for prenatal practice. Please advise your instructor that you are expecting, as some modifications to poses may be necessary.
Meditation- An opportunity to practice mindfulness through sitting meditation. Open sitting, non-denominational. No experience necessary.
Gyrokinesis - Once called "Yoga for Dancers," Gyrokinesis explores spinal mobility. This unique system was developed to gently work the joints and muscles of the body through rhythmic, undulating motions that embrace key principles also found in swimming, dance, yoga, tai chi, and gymnastincs. Much like yoga vinyasa, which links poses dynamically using the breath, the fluidity inherent in Gyrokinesis allows you to move your spine in nine different ways.
Functional Yoga - Gain a feeling of well-being as you participate in a gentle yoga workout. This class will focus on improving your strength, flexibility, balance, and breath awareness. yoga poses will be modified for all levels and abilities, with props such as chairs used as needed. Whether you just want to improve your activity and fitness level, or would like to be able to getout of a chair without groaning, this class is for you. Seniors, women who are pregnant, those with chronic health conditions, weight issues, etc. will benefit. A note from a physician may be requested for acute conditions.
